Jacksonville Sweeps by N.C. Central & Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Dolphins dominated on Friday at the Wingate Invitational sweeping N.C. Central and host Charleston Southern in straight sets.

"I am super impressed with how we came out today," said Head Coach Julie Darty. "We played back to back and the way we carried ourselves with confidence and poise to execute and get the job done in straights sets was quite impressive. I feel like we had a very solid day defensively and continue to get better as a unit."

Jacksonville (5-4) started the day by defeating N.C. Central 25-17, 25-16, 27-25 behind 14 kills from junior Sammie Strausbaugh (Dover, Pa.) and 12 kills from junior Emily Laskelle (Napa, Calif.). In her first game as the Dolphins starting libero, freshman Nicole Pritchard (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the squad with 14 digs.

After cruising through the first two sets, the third was a battle that game down to the wire. N.C. Central held a 24-21 lead before a kill by Strausbaugh followed by two errors from the Eagles evened the count. N.C. Central had game point again at 25-24 when a kill from Laskelle tied the game once more. Back-to-back blocks by Jacksonville then sealed the set and the match for he Dolphins.

"We are playing like a team and have really commit to doing a job and doing it well," Darty said. "At this point, it doesn't mater who is across the net, it's all about us and getting into a good rhythm where we can play good volleyball on our side of the net."

Later in the afternoon the momentum carried forth as Jacksonville breezed by Charleston Southern by scores of 25-15, 25-7 and 25-12.

Strausbaugh totaled 15 kills along with four aces in the win while Laskelle added 10 kills. The Dolphins hit .418 as a team for the match as they trailed just once over the entire three set match.

Action at the Wingate Invitational concludes for Jacksonville on Saturday with a 1:00 pm contest against South Carolina State.
