Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – Finishing two-for-two, the Jacksonville University women's soccer team cleaned house in the College of Charleston Cup. A pair of early goals, the game winner rocketed in the 11th minute of the first half, lifted JU to a 2-1 victory over the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon.
Not even a minute ticked by in the match before the Dolphins put a score on the stat sheet. Fifty-one seconds was all Marie Weckhurst needed as she tallied her second goal of the season. The score began with Julia Burton playing a long ball into the box which Weckhurst connected with for the quick 1-0 advantage.
With the match knotted at 1-1, at the 11-minute mark, Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez worked the ball into the penalty area and Kaitlyn Bassett ran onto the cross, blasting it past the Cougar keeper.
The goal marked Bassett's 14th career game winner which ties for fourth most in Atlantic Sun women's soccer history.
"I was proud of the first half, we created two chances and scored two goals." said Head Coach Brian Copham. "We do, however, have to be more consistent in our creating chances. We played hard against a tough team. The second was a very good half even though there were no additional goals. We started to see some progress with connecting passes and moving off the ball. I'm pleased with the progress we made this weekend as a group. Congratulations to Sarah Sierra, Lindsay Forrest, and Marie Weckhurst for being named to the all-tournament team."
Though the Cougars managed a 17-6 edge in shot attempts, JU goalkeeper Sierra turned away numerous scoring opportunities with 11 saves in the net.
The win improved the Dolphins to 4-2-1 while CofC slipped to 2-4-0.
Jacksonville returns to Southern Oak Stadium on Friday, Sept. 12 to face Florida Atlantic. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
