Dolphins Lose to FGCU in Five Sets

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Though Jacksonville University's volleyball team was in the match until the final point, FGCU had just enough to win at the Historic Swisher Gym in five sets.

"It was another five-set battle on our home court," said Head Coach Julie Darty. "It seems like we really like to play long games. We're really struggling to find consistent rhythm for three straight sets, we're really up-and-down, and that's why it keeps going to five sets."

The Dolphins came out of the locker room a little flat, allowing FGCU to put up a 5-0 lead in the first set. The Dolphins were able to pull within one point at 9-8, but a well-timed timeout allowed the Eagles to get the momentum back, and FGCU won 25-17 to go up 1-0. There were several lead changes in the second set, but the Dolphins took control at 11-10, winning the set 25-22 to tie the match 1-1. The third set had nine ties, including at 20-20, but again the Dolphins had just enough to take the set, winning 25-22 to go up 2-1. FGCU won the first point of the fourth set and never looked back, winning the set 25-22 to force a fifth. The Eagles had a 13-10 lead in the fifth, but Jacksonville refused to go away, tying the set at 15-15. FGCU and JU traded the next seven points before FGCU took the final three points of the match, taking the set 21-19 and the match 3-2.

"We really just need to find ourselves and play good volleyball on our side of the net," continued Darty. "It's tough losing to this team at home, and it's certainly going to be a battle at their place on Halloween."

Emily Laskelle had 28 kills and 13 digs, her fifth double-double of the season. Kelly Koop also had a double-double with 19 kills and 19 digs. Jizzyan Gesualdo had her eleventh double-double of the season with 52 assists and 11 digs, and Mayara Prestes had a double-double with 30 digs and 10 assists. Jessica Armstrong and Koop both had three total blocks.

"I though Maya was ridiculous tonight," said Darty. "She was everywhere on the court digging balls, but she can only do so much, and it's the same thing with Emily. We're still struggling to find some offensive production from somebody else, though Koop had a nice stretch of kills in set four. Jizzy has to do a better job on offense and with trusting people. I think that's the moral of the story. We've got to trust people to do their jobs. I hope we can take something from this match and get better, but now we've got to focus on UNF."

The Dolphins host UNF next Friday before heading on the road for two weeks.
