Dolphins Struggle from Deep in Loss to South Carolina State

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – A 10-0 run by Jacksonville University's men's basketball team wasn't quite enough to overcome a 4-18 performance from three, and the Dolphins dropped their fourth road loss of the year, losing 81-74 to South Carolina State.

The Dolphins came out of the halftime locker room a bit flat, missing three of their first four shots. The Bulldogs outscored JU 20-8 in the first five minutes of the second half, and led 58-41 with 14:58 left in the game. JU made several runs, cutting the lead down to under 10 with 2:57 remaining. Four straight turnovers by the Bulldogs late in the game led to 10 straight points for the Dolphins, who pulled within three, 74-71, with just 1:34 left. But South Carolina State closed the game with a run of its own, outscoring JU 7-3 in the final minute.

Kori Babineaux led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 10-15 from the field. Marcel White had 13 points and eight rebounds, Darien Fernandez had 11 points and two assists, and Darius Dawkins was 5-5 from the line with 10 points.

The Dolphins went into the halftime locker room trailing the Bulldogs 38-33. JU struggled with shooting from the get-go, making just two of its first six shots. The Dolphins finished the half shooting 39.4 percent (13-33), and just 25 percent from three (3-12). The half largely belonged to South Carolina State; the Bulldogs led for over 17 minutes in the first half, allowing just one tie in the period.

The Dolphins drop to 4-6 this season and 1-4 on the road, and South Carolina State improves to 5-5, 3-0 at home. Up next for JU is a 7 p.m. tip at South Florida on Wednesday, Dec. 16. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 3 and mixlr.com/judolphins. The Dolphins finally return home on Dec. 21, when they'll face Florida A&M in the friendly confines of the Historic Swisher Gym.
