Dolphins Conclude JU Invitational with 3-2 Win

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University softball team concluded its hosting duties of the JU Invitational with a 3-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman. In the Sunday matinee, the Dolphins picked up their third win of the tournament to improve to 5-6 on the season.

"It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but we were able to scratch out the victory," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "We didn't hit it as well as I would have liked to see this weekend. We were hesitant at times and guessed a lot. Regardless, we are showing that we have fire in our bellies and can fight from behind, which is a great quality to see in the first few weeks of the season."

With the Wildcats striking first on a 2-run homer to left field in the top of the second, the Dolphins used the bottom half of the inning to close the deficit to one. Lexie Ballard led off the inning with a double to center field and later rounded the bases on back-to-back BC-U errors.

When Sable Lee walked up to the plate, one out on the board, there was a Dolphin positioned on every base. She reached first on a fielder's choice and the tying run was called out at home on a play between the second baseman and the catcher. The Wildcat pitcher would escape the inning on a ground out and the Dolphins closed the frame with one run, one hit and three left on base.

In the third, Ashley Simon tied the ballgame at 2-2 on her second home run of the tournament, a solo shot down the leftfield line, and then singled to right center to bring Danielle Baker home for the winning run in the fifth.

The Wildcats hadn't recorded a hit since the top of the second and with two outs in the seventh, they recorded a single. On the next play, Emily Sanchez walked it to the bag for the unassisted out.

Simon finished the affair 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Victoria Brown was credited with the win, surrendering one hit in four innings pitched.

Jacksonville returns to action later this week at the South Alabama Invitational where it will take on Sam Houston State, Ball State, University of Tennessee- Chattanooga and the host, South Alabama. Game one on is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20 against Sam Houston State.
