Jacksonville Downs Former A-Sun Member Elon on Friday

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team downed former Atlantic Sun member Elon 13-6 in a Friday night game at D.B. Milne Field.

"I thought our defense did a great job," said head coach Mindy McCord. "We forced eleven saves and stops and really took ownership of getting the ball back. We need a lot more discipline and control over certain aspects and individual discipline. But overall, I think Elon was a very tough opponent they played us tough and we need to execute at a higher level for Sunday."

Eight Dolphins scored the 13 goals, Brittney Orashen led the team with a hat trick (three goals), followed by Holly Ventimiglia, Jess Worcester and Danielle Della Rocca with two each. Hannah Wilcox, Jaime Chapman, Rachel Aus and Taylor McCord each add one goal to the score as well.

"The (three) goals, were definitely a team effort," said senior midfielder Orashen. "My teammates set me up for success by their movement on offense; it really helped me to open myself up and gave me an opportunity to take the shots."

Jacksonville started strong with Ventimiglia and the team's first goal being scored just three minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Ventimiglia struck again putting the team up 2-0 in the first seven minutes.

Less than halfway through the first half, the Dolphins' McCord made her seventh goal of the season, putting the team up 3-0. Jacksonville added another three goals by Orashen and Aus to end the half up 6-2.

36 seconds into the second half, Orashen picked up her third goal of the game, fourth on the season, putting Jacksonville up 7-2. Elon countered the goal to make it 7-3, but Orashen got a draw control and Della Rocca scored her eighth goal on the season and the eighth goal of the game.

The Phoenix countered with a goal on part, but after getting a draw control, they turned the ball over to Jacksonville giving them a goal by Worcester, who was assisted by Caitlin McMahon.

In the last 12 minutes, Jacksonville outscored Elon 4-2, each of the four goals were made by a different Dolphin (Wilcox, Worcester, Chapman, Della Rocca). JU ended the game on a ground ball pickup by Erika Brager following a Phoenix turnover.

The Dolphins return to D.B. Milne Field as they face San Diego State on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3 with Josh Jackson and Brian Freshley at the call.
