MOBILE, Ala. – The Jacksonville University softball team continued play at the South Alabama Invitational splitting the day's duties with a 6-5 victory over Ball State and a 7-2 setback to Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Game 1
The Dolphins reversed roles from their previous outing and found themselves on the winning side of a walk-off in game two of the tournament.
Ball State's pitcher Nicole Steinbech kept Jacksonville hitless through 4 1/3 innings, when Emily Sanchez recorded a solo shot, her second of the tournament, to put the Dolphins on the scoreboard.
Steinbech escaped the inning protecting the Cardinals' 5-1 advantage, but the Dolphins soon had the right-hander figured out and pieced together three runs in the sixth on singles by Sanchez, Brooke Smith and Kristen Griffith.
And there the Dolphins were in the bottom of the seventh, trailing Ball State by one. Victoria Brown led off the inning with a three-bagger to right field and with no outs and in need of a hit to tie the game, Ashley Simon stepped up to the plate and brought Brown home on a double.
Griffith would be the Dolphins' hero. There were two outs and a runner occupying each base when she hit a single to right, giving the Dolphins a 6-5 walk-off win.
Pitching back-to-back complete games, Brown picked up the win with seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings pitched.
Game 2
Jacksonville met Tennessee-Chattanooga on Jaguar Field on Saturday afternoon where it fell by a score of 7-2.
Both of the Dolphins' runs were scored in the fifth inning and neither was recorded on a hit as UTC limited the Fins to just three hits in the ballgame.
Taylor Rossman took to the mound for JU, yielding 10 hits including a pair of home runs in six innings pitched.
