Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team added another victory under their belt as they defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 18-11 on Sunday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field.
Danielle Della Rocca led the Dolphins with a school record of 11 shots in a game. Della Rocca also led today's game five goals. Seven additional Jacksonville players also scored goals. Kelsey Wiglesworth and Rachel Aus each grabbed three goals, followed by Jess Worcester and Brittney Orashen with two goals each. Sally Holbert, Holly Ventimiglia and Hannah Wilcox each nabbed a goal in today's game.
In the first 59 seconds of the game, Della Rocca was fouled and given a free position attempt where she made the first goal of the game. Though San Diego State countered and scored about a minute and a half later. Ventimiglia scored the next goal for the Dolphins as she was fouled and shot a free position which went off the post, she retrieved the ground ball and scored on the play.
Unfortunately, San Diego State went on a 3-0 streak to put the game at 4-2 with the Aztec's leading. Jacksonville called a timeout to regroup and refocus on playing the game as a team. Aus scored the next two goals to tie up the game at 4, with an assist from Abby Remenapp and Wiglesworth on each of the plays, respectively.
The Aztec's tried to make a two-goal run but the Dolphins ended it quickly with three more goals to put Jacksonville up 7-6 at the half. Orashen scored unassisted with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, followed up by two Wiglesworth goals with assists from Worcester and Della Rocca.
After halftime, the Dolphins went on a 5-0 run to go up 12-6 after only five minutes of play in the second half. Worcester struck first with a goal that was assisted from Holbert. 30 seconds later, Wilcox scored off an Orashen assist. Followed by an Aus goal off a Della Rocca assist. Worcester free position goal and a Della Rocca free position goal ended the 5-0 run. San Diego State tried to make a comeback with a Lauren Maack goal but Jacksonville closed the door going on another 3-0 run. Orashen made her second goal of the game, followed by two Della Rocca goals (one free position, the other unassisted).
The Aztecs scored twice more, but were shut down again by a Dolphin run. Holbert scored her first goal of the game and of the season with 9:11 remaining in the game, off of a Worcester assist. Della Rocca scored her final goal of the game off of a Remenapp assist and Wiglesworth scored her and the Dolphin's final goal of the game off of a Holbert assist with 5:09 left to play.
Jacksonville ran the clock down to a 1:41 left to play before San Diego State scored off of a ground ball pickup. Jacksonville's Orashen controlled the draw before turning it over to San Diego State which led to the Aztec's final goal with 27 seconds left.
The Dolphins go on the road as they face Coastal Carolina on Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m.
