Jacksonville Blanks Hampton with Shutout Win

TAMPA, Fla. – For the second time in as many days, the Jacksonville University softball team defeated Hampton, 8-0 in its third game of the USF Tournament. The Dolphins will continue their road swing tonight, with an 8:15 p.m. start with tournament host South Florida at the Gonzmart Family Complex.

Recording her first win of 2015, junior Taylor Rossman pitched a gem. The Tallahassee native threw six innings of shutout softball, striking out three batters en route to the 8-0 victory.

"I was impressed with Taylor," said head coach Jennifer Steele. "She really rebounded from yesterday and threw her best stuff. She did a really nice job spinning the curve, changed speeds well and wasn't afraid to go inside. She did a nice job battling through all six innings."

Rossman had plenty of offensive production as junior Victoria Brown ended the game with a deep drive to centerfield for the walk-off grand slam in the sixth inning, her second homerun of the game, fourth in two days. Brown totaled seven RBI and has five hits in seven at bats for the tournament, adding six walks.

Her head coach on the performances of the junior from Plano, Texas.

"I think it looks as big as a beach ball," said Steele. "She's seeing the ball really well and she's riding good at bats into her following at bat and continues to get great results."

The scoring began when freshman Danielle Baker recorded her first of a three-hit morning, with an RBI-base hit and the routing was on. With two runners on base, Brown sent a drive over the right field wall for her third homerun of the tournament.

Next up for the Fins is tournament host USF, first pitch slated for 8:15 tonight, a team that is recieving votes in the top-25 poll.

"(USF) is really a tough team, said Steele. "We are going to have to make a lot of plays on defense, because they don't swing and miss much. We will need to be creative and have great pitch sequences in order to keep their hitters off balance."
