Jacksonville Battles But Overcome by Winthrop's Five-Run Inning

Box Score

ROCK HILL, S.C., – Amidst cold temperatures and rain throughout, the Jacksonville University baseball team was overcome by Winthrop's five-run third inning and dropped the decision, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins (5-6) return home for four games, as Florida A&M comes to town for a weekday matchup on Tuesday.

"(The weather) was the same for both sides," said head coach Tim Montez. "It comes down to competing mentally and throwing strikes. We got beat in two phases this weekend; mental toughness and pitching. When you walk eight guys through three and a third inning, you can't expect to come up on the positive side (of a game)."

The Dolphins were able to rattle off four runs on six hits, but were overcome by four walks in the third that would amount to five runs.

"It comes down to throwing strikes and we have to get back to that," said Montez. "We had pitchers that really attacked the zone this weekend with; Michael Baumann, Nathan Disch, Shane Wise and Bryce Baker last night. We have a lot of baseball ahead of us. We'll find that group that wants to be out there to attack the zone no matter what the conditions are."

Connor Marabell (1-for-4) sent a line drive over the center fielders head for a double, his eighth of the season,  to lead off the eighth inning. Battling in the at-bat, Dillard would fight off eight pitches to put the ball in play, scoring Marabell off the fielder's choice 6-3 put out, resulting in the 6-4 final.

Sophomore Disch's lights-out performance continues. In 10.2 innings, the Wisconsin native has not surrendered a run. Today, he went 3.2 innings, with two strikeouts and just one hit. Shane Wise provided a one-two-three inning in the eighth, striking out two.

Senior Angelo Amendolare (1-1), has been a menace on the base-paths, stealing eight bags in just seven games, to go along with his offensive production of a seven-game hitting streak, that has the senior hitting 17-for-30 (.566) over that stretch.

Senior Cameron Gibson (1-for-3) tallied doubles (4) in every game against Winthrop, and has hits in 10-of-11 games this season, reaching base in 27-consecutive games dating back to last season.

We have good leadership and there is no reason to panic," said Montez. "We need to keep challenging our guys to get thicker skin, and do the things we've coached them to do"

In the fourth inning, JU would get one run as JJ Gould (1-for-4) launched a solo-home run over the left field wall, his first as a Dolphin.

The win was a no-decision for the Eagles as Crohan left in the fourth inning, having surrendered two runs and struck out seven. Jeff Tanner (1-1) gets the loss after surrendering three earned in 2.2 innings pitched, with a strikeout.

Dolphins put up two runs in the first inning by way of two doubles from the seniors, Gibson to lead off, and Amendolare (7) followed suite. They would put up one more run after Amendolare scored after an errant throw by catcher Roger Gonzalez. 2-0.
