Errors Sink Dolphins in Samford Series Finale

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Capitalizing on Jacksonville University's errors, Samford defeated the Dolphins, 6-0, in the finale of their three-game series Sunday afternoon at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.

JU's starting pitcher, Taylor Rossman, did her job in forcing the first three Samford batters to hit it on the ground. Unfortunately, what should have been three consecutive outs on routine ground balls quickly took a turn for the worse as errors provided the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead in the first.

By the fifth inning Samford tacked on three more runs, all of them scored at the hands of JU errors, to boost their advantage to 5-0.

The Dolphins' typically booming bats were slightly sluggish. Entering the sixth inning outhit, 6-2, Victoria Brown connected on a single to left center to leadoff the frame. In the end, Jacksonville left two runners on base with one in scoring position.

Samford's solo home run in the final inning capped the day's scoring. The Dolphins had a chance to plate a few in the seventh but a fly out with the bases loaded put an end to any possible rally.

Brown went 2-for-3 in the outing and also pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering three hits and two runs while fanning four.

The Bulldogs are the second team to hold Jacksonville scoreless this season. Taking on the reigning national champions, Florida, in February, the Fins fell by nine.

Jacksonville's eight-game home stretch continues on Wednesday, March 18 in a doubleheader with Monmouth. The two games will wrap non-conference action before the Fins are tested by USC Upstate in their A-Sun opener on Saturday, March 21.
