No. 18 Stony Brook Pushes Past Jacksonville

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Controlling the draw, causing more turnovers and grabbing more ground balls couldn't lift the Jacksonville women's lacrosse team to a victory over No. 18 Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins dropped the decision 13-4.

"We were able to convert on some of the possessions and counter attack, as well as, get some possessions off the draw and really lead in that aspect of the game," said Head Coach Mindy McCord. "Our defense got some key stops in the second half but unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize off of their adjustments."

Jacksonville led Stony Brook in four categories. The Dolphins grabbed 18 ground balls, controlled the draw 11-8, caused 12 turnovers and went 100 percent in clears. Offensively, Sally Holbert went 2-for-2 from the field with four ground balls. Defensively, Erika Brager and Brittney Orashen grabbed three ground balls each. Orashen also garnered four of the 11 draw controls.

The Dolphins countered the Seawolves' 3-0 opening run with a back-to-back goals. Danielle Della Rocca's 20th goal of the season started things for Jacksonville. Holbert followed with her first score of the game off an assist from Della Rocca. Later in the half, Orashen scored an unassisted goal to bring the Dolphins within four before they went into the break trailing 9-3.

After halftime, Jacksonville cut into the margin grabbing the first goal just four minutes into the stanza as Holbert scored her second goal of the game off a Jess Worcester assist. Unfortunately from there, the Dolphins were unable to take advantage of their opportunities on the offensive end as Stony Brook ended the game with four unanswered goals.

The Dolphins return to D.B. Milne Field as they are scheduled to face Marist College on Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m.
