Della Rocca's School Record Nine Points Lead Young Dolphins Past Presbyterian

Box Score

CLINTON, S.C.—Danielle Della Rocca set a school record with nine total points to lead a strong performance by the Jacksonville underclassmen in a 22-7 victory over Presbyterian College on Sunday afternoon.

"It was great to get our younger players significant playing time," said Head Coach Mindy McCord. "When our freshmen and sophomores step up like they did, we are able to rest our veterans, which is important with conference starting next week."

The Dolphins continued with a balanced scoring attack as 14 of the 17 attackers and midfielders who played, scored at least one goal in the game. Della Rocca racked up seven goals and two assists in her record setting performance. Her nine total points surpass the previous mark of eight held by Morgan Derner on March 16, 2011 against LIU. The seven goals meanwhile match the single game school mark set by Derner in the same contest.

Along with Della Rocca, Kelsey Wiglesworth and Holly Ventimiglia each totaled five points with a goal and four assists a piece. Wiglesworth added two ground balls and three draw controls to help pace the attack.

"We are very impressed with Kelsey Wiglesworth as she really stepped up and made some key plays," added McCord.

Della Rocca put the Dolphins on the board just 23 seconds after the opening draw, scoring the first of her three goals, all off assists from Ventimiglia, in a 4-0 run the first eight minutes of action. After the Blue Hose finally scored, Jacksonville continued it keep the pressure on scoring three more times all in a 24 second span. The Dolphins outburst extend the lead to 7-1 after just 11 minutes of play and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

Jacksonville eventually led 13-5 at halftime before starting the second half on an 8-0 run over an 18 minute time frame. Rachel Aus found the back of the net for the initial goal just a minute into the second half while Kelly Lacy ended the run with a completed free-position shot. Jacksonville only allowed two goals and four shots in the second half and held Presbyterian for 21 minutes without a score.

The Dolphins continue on their road-swing as the open Atlantic Sun play at Old Dominion on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m.
