JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University sand volleyball team won a pair of matches over the College of Charleston and Carson-Newman on Saturday on the first of two days of competition at the College of Charleston Sand Tournament. The Dolphins began the day with a 4-1 win over the host Cougars before sweeping Carson-Newman 5-0 later in the afternoon.
"I'm very proud of the team effort that contributed to our win today vs the host of this great tournament," said Head Coach Julie Darty of the 4-1 win to start the day.
No. 1 pair of Kelly Koop and Sammie Strausbaugh won 24-22, 21-13 at No. 2 Maya Prestes and Emily Laskelle were victorious 21-17, 21-5. Jacksonville also claimed wins at No. 4 with Lauren Gresham and Cristina Finan winning 21-19, 21-18 and at No. 5 with Olga Nushtayeva and Ana Gabriella Nieto-Gomez winning 21-12, 21-18.
"We mixed up a few pairs and tried some new line ups and we are pleased with how it went," Darty said of the victories at the No. 4 and 5 pairs. "We have been focusing on our setting and ball control and I think the extra focus helped a lot based on the quality of our passing & setting today. We still have lots to work on and improve upon but I am pleased with the way we responded today after our loss to Stetson earlier this week."
In the afternoon, all five pairs for the Dolphins won in straight sets.
"So proud of another total team win today," Darty added on the victory over Carson-Newman. "We are slowly starting to figure out the level that we will play at and are trying to play at that level all the time. Consistency is key for us right now and I think this was a great dual for us to end today on."
Action at the tournament continues tomorrow for the Dolphins against Tulane at 9:30 and and Georgia State at 2:00 pm.
