Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – After today, five will undoubtedly be the Jacksonville University softball team's favorite number as it used five hits to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 5-0 defeat over Loyola Chicago.
Hits were a bit hard to come by from both squads until the Dolphins found their sweet spot in the magical inning. The bases were loaded for Ashley Simon who slapped a two-RBI double to right center for the first runs of the game. A batter later, Emily Sanchez singled through the left side, scoring Victoria Brown.
With one out and two on, Jackie DiPiazza commanded the attention of the Ramblers' infielders and for good reason. Pinch running for Sanchez, she stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. The play also scored Simon before Lexie Ballard singled to bring DiPiazza home.
In the sixth, the Ramblers reached as far as second base and didn't advance past first in the last stanza as Brown struck out two batters before forcing the final hitter to fly out. In total, she worked seven innings, ceding no runs on four hits while striking out five.
Simon finished the game 2-for-3 for her eighth multi-hit game this season and fourth in the last week.
Jacksonville retakes the field Saturday, March 7, in day two of the Holy City Showdown. Action at Patriots Point begins 9 a.m. versus Liberty and continues at 1 p.m. with the host, College of Charleston.
