Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine's Austin Shanks scored four goals, his first less than a minute into the game, and the Knights had six first period goals in beating Jacksonville University 17-9, in a Southern Conference game here Saturday.
Shanks, a sophomore and the team's leading scorer, connected with 14:23 to go in the opening quarter and the Knights pulled to a 2-0 lead before JU senior Quint Miller scored the first of his three goals with 9:23 to play in the opener and that was followed by Chase McIntyre's goal with 35 seconds to play in the first.
The Dolphins (4-6, 1-3) struck quickly in the second period as Dakota Rohlin (Temecula, Calif.) and senior Brian Kensil (Massapequa, N.Y.) connected, both within the first three minutes of the second period to get to within two at 6-4. It was Kensil's first goal of the season.
The Knights (4-6, 2-2) responded with five consecutive goals and won the first half 11-4 as the teams played mostly even through the second half.
"We started slow and our inability to make a save in the first half dug us a hole,'' JU coach Guy Van Arsdale said.
Miller (Lancaster, Pa.) scored his third goal of the game, and 13th of the season, late in the third and the Dolphins trailed, 13-7 but Bellarmine closed the deal with four goals in the final period.
Van Arsdale found a silver lining in the second-half play.
"We came back fighting in the second half and some young players showed real growth,'' he said. "We still need to be better finishing our shot opportunities; we left some goals on the field today.''
Rohlin ended the game with a pair of goals as did McIntyre (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Shawn Ewart (Dublin, Oh.) had a goal.
The Dolphins travel to league-leading Mercer Saturday.
