Box Score FT. MYERS, Fla. – Sunday's series finale between Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast served as the Eagles' Senior Day but it was a Dolphin senior who stole the show. An out away from being swept, Ashley Simon hit a grand slam in the seventh in what became JU's 7-3 victory.
"I knew she had just thrown me down and away, so I knew she was going to throw me up and in next, and I really like that pitch," said Simon. "I was just thinking keep my hands up and hit a line drive to left field."
"This feels good. It's been a battle with FGCU all four years and this was a team win. Taylor pitched incredibly and people got on base. If my teammates don't get on, it's a solo home run and doesn't do anything. It feels good to hit that ball and finally step up for my team."
After FGCU's first two batters singled, a double down the right field line plated a pair for the team's early lead. The edge was short lived, however, as JU responded in the second to tie things at 2-2. Allie McCourt walked up to the plate with Dolphins on second and third and used a slap bunt to bring one home before Danielle Baker singled through the left side to score the tying run.
A throwing error allowed the Eagles to record the go-ahead run in the fourth but Jacksonville answered in the seventh.
Trailing 3-2, Ashley Simon saved the day with her first career grand slam. Jackie DiPiazza led off the stanza with a single through the left side and with no outs on the board, Victoria Brown and Baker joined her to load the bases.
Simon worked a 2-2 count before homering to left for JU's 6-3 advantage and the five-run inning was crowned on a Brooke Hardy RBI-single.
Jacksonville recorded five hits in the final frame which also included a double by Kristen Griffith.
Taylor Rossman picked up the win in the decision. With seven innings pitched, she allowed five hits and three runs – two earned.
The series decision improves the Dolphins to 23-22 overall and 5-7 in the Atlantic Sun.
Next weekend, a River City Rumble is in store for the program as it travels to North Florida for a three-game set.
