Caused Turnovers Lead Jacksonville Past Kennesaw State

Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga.—The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team used 16 caused turnovers to clinch the top-seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun tournament with a 19-3 victory over Kennesaw State on Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. They also clinched a share of the regular season title.

"We are excited that we clinched both a top-seed and part of the regular season conference title," said Head Coach Mindy McCord. "It was a great team effort, and our defensive transition game really helped us with the win as they forced 16 caused turnovers. Holly (Ventimiglia) had a huge game in the attacker position and Caitlin (McMahon) was great with getting us possessions from the draw."

Senior attacker Ventimiglia led the team with six goals, two caused turnovers, a groundball and a draw control. Controlling the draw was reigning Player of the Week McMahon, who grabbed the draw six times. Sophomore attacker Rachel Aus tallied a hat trick (going 100 percent from the field) and she grabbed five groundballs.

Jacksonville took a while to start up its engines, but once it did there was no stopping the momentum. Five minutes in, Ashtyn Hiron scored the first goal, followed by a goal by Brittney Orashen a minute later. The Dolphins put a stop to Kennesaw's attempt to hold their own, JU followed KSU's goal with an 8-0 run started by junior Kelsey Wiglesworth. The run spanned 18 minutes and was ended by an Owl's goal to close out the half. Jacksonville entered the half leading 10-2.

Unlike the first half, the Dolphins had no issue with starting quick, as Ventimiglia netted four consecutive goals. Aus followed in her footsteps scoring three goals in a row to put Jacksonville up 17-2. Senior attacker Tori Seitz grabbed a quick goal to end the 8-0 run. The Dolphins allowed Kennesaw to find the back of the net one last time, before closing the game with a MacEllen McDonough goal.

The Dolphins travel to DeLand, Fla., as they close out the regular season at Stetson on Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m.
