Dolphins fall in season finale

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University waited out a five-hour storm delay then committed costly second half miscues and fell to Furman, 11-7, in the season finale at D. B. Milne Field Saturday night.

After the long delay, the Dolphins (4-8, 1-5 in the Southern Conference) got off to 2-1 lead when senior attack Quint Miller scored the first of his four goals with 3:21 to play in the first quarter followed by a Zac Buller (Herndon, Va.) score a mere 22 seconds later on an assist by junior Chase McIntyre.

Miller, from Lancaster, Pa., carried the Dolphins in the second quarter with a pair of goals, one unassisted and the second on a throw and shoot from junior Dakota Rohlin (Temecula, Calif.). The goals led to 4-4 halftime tie.

The Paladins (4-8, 3-3) took advantage of the JU mistakes in the third quarter and scored four successive goals and Miller connected on the final goal of his college career on Senior Day with 3:54 to play in the third.

JU got back to within 9-7 when sophomore attack Doran Graham (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and McIntyre (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored in the fourth, but Furman scored twice in the last 4:18 to lock the game up. It was Graham's first career goal.

"With us not winning face offs and with us not handling the ball well in the offensive end and having turnovers, that puts pressure on the defense and forces the defense to have to play at a really high level for sustained periods of time and we did at times,'' JU coach Guy Van Arsdale said. "One or two breakdowns and, bang, it costs you and that's what happened in the third quarter and it got away. We would come back to the offensive end and through no effort of them we turned the ball over. It was a lack of handling the ball that caused us to fall into that valley.''

On the up side, the Dolphins got somewhat a glimpse of the future in several areas.

"We had some young guys cut teeth,'' Van Arsdale said. "(Freshman) Ryan Beville came in and really set a tone as an athlete and made some big play. (Goalie) Ben Gleichenhaus the last two games has played more than well enough for us to win in the goal,'' Van Arsdale said. "It bodes very well for the future.''

Gleichenhaus (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) made his first collegiate start at goal and came out of the fray intact.

"I wasn't fazed after the first shot,'' he said. "It's definitely a lot faster than I thought. The ball moves a lot quicker.''
