Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Hitting is contagious and for the Jacksonville University softball team it translated into a heap of runs as the Dolphins combated a four-game winless spell with back-to-back run-rule victories over Stetson. Again receiving production from every slot in the order, JU outhit the Hatters 11-to-6 to take the series by a score of 14-2.
Both Jordan Daniels and Lexie Ballard recorded four RBIs on the day while Victoria Brown pitched the complete game with no earned runs credited to her name.
"It's great to win the series against a very strong Stetson club," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "We worked hard on our offense this past week and our hitters were confident. Scoring so many runs allowed Victoria to have a cushion since she threw every inning for us. We were calm on defense and responded when our backs were up against the wall. I'm excited for us to ride this momentum into the NKU series this weekend."
In yesterday's ballgames both Stetson and JU reached base in every inning. The first two innings of Wednesday's regular season home finale was quite the opposite as Brown retired six straight Hatters. A leadoff single in the third ended the stretch but Jacksonville's defense held her to first, tallying a fielder's choice, a tough leaping grab from Danielle Baker and a fly out.
For the Dolphins, three extra base hits were recorded in the first and all were sent to right center. Brown led off the stanza with a double and made her way home on Ashley Simon's two bagger. The shot by Emily Sanchez traveled over the wall for a 2-RBI home run and crowned the Dolphins' 3-0 advantage.
Ballard extended the team's lead to 7-0 in the second. Facing a 3-1 count, she took a pitch down the middle and homered down the left field line to extend JU's edge.
The Fins scored 10 unanswered runs before Errors in the fourth interrupted what could have been Brown's second straight scoreless game. Stetson used the JU miscues to its advantage for two runs but the Dolphins lengthened the gap with a two-out three-RBI triple by Baker to effectively conclude the game.
Jacksonville attempts to claim the final spot of the upcoming Atlantic Sun Tournament with a successful stint at Northern Kentucky this weekend. The three-game set begins Friday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
