SARASOTA, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's rowing program has been crowned back-to-back FIRA Champions. From the help of three No. 1 times and three other top-three performances, the Dolphins placed first for the women's point title and also joined JU's men's program at the podium as the overall point champions.
The third event of Saturday's races featured seven crews in battle for the varsity eight medal. Barry won the heat in 6:55.9 to narrowly edge JU who earned a silver medal with a time of 6:59.6.
JU's first championship performance of the day was done by the junior varsity eight crew. Edging Central Oklahoma by 9.3 seconds, the Dolphins crossed the finish line in 7:22.2. Rollins rounded out the top three in 7:40.5.
Georgia Tech set the standard in the pair final (8:19.1) and Jacksonville wrapped the heat in fourth place clocking in at 8:44.0.
In another solid performance, it was the Dolphins who paced all others in the freshmen eight heat. With a time of 7:21.7, the Fins were 27.5 seconds faster than the second-place Florida and 46.2 seconds faster than the third-place Rollins.
As the final boat to complete its course in under eight minutes, JU's junior varsity four raced in at third (7:58.1). Seven-tenths of a second separated No.2 Nova Southern and the Dolphins but neither was close to Barry, the event winner (7:38.9).
The freshmen/novice four crew rowed in for the gold medal, winning with a time of 8:09.5. Oklahoma City, Nova, Barry and Embry-Riddle completed the top-five.
In the final two races of the day, JU finished fifth in the women's varsity "B" four event (8:20.9) before the team completed the day's action with the varsity four crews. The Dolphins' V4 was awarded the bronze medal for a third-place time of 7:46.0. Nova Southern finished in the top spot in 7:39.7 and Central Oklahoma was second (7:43.1).
