Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team met No. 10 Florida at Southern Oak Stadium on Sunday afternoon where four goals, all scored by the Gators in the first half, separated the two.
All but one of UF's goals came as a result of an end line cross in the box; its' first goal was tallied on a shot from the top left corner of the penalty area in the third minute of the match.
"At halftime, we talked about their goals," said Head Coach Brian Copham. "Most of those were us not competing and doing our job in the box when the ball was served from a wide position."
"I challenged them individually to be better at their responsibilities and then collectively for us to raise our level. We know Florida is an excellent team. There's a reason they are top 10 in the country. [At halftime] I just challenged our girls to push themselves, to try to match their intensity and compete for the last 45 minutes."
The halftime score of 4-0 stuck through the final horn as Sara Wicks and the Dolphins' defense kept Florida off the board in the second frame.
Wicks finished the match with a season-high 10 saves. Five were recorded in each period.
"Sara did a great job in net today," Copham continued. "She faced a number of shots and not only made some really great saves for us but helped us in organizing our backline."
Jacksonville returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 20 when it concludes its non-conference slate with Furman at 2 p.m.
"These games help us prepare for conference by exposing us to a number of different things. Florida is an outstanding possession team, very good in the attack and very athletic. We had to deal with good athletes all over the field."
"Matches like today and Furman, who's going to be another big challenge, will prepare us for anyone we're going to see in conference. We'll have to be at our best to successful and that's also what it's going to take in conference."
