PK in Double Overtime Mars Dolphins' Comeback Performance

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Jacksonville University men's soccer team faced Campbell Friday night where it overcame a 3-0 deficit to tie the match at the end of regulation. Despite Jacksonville's valiant efforts, a penalty kick in the 108th minute sealed the Fighting Camels' 4-3 victory.

The teams combined for six goals in the second half with Ivo Lima, Ejiroghene Mrabure and Joe Amico scoring for JU.

The decision moved the Dolphins to 2-3-1 overall while Campbell improved to 3-3-0.

"I'm really proud of the players for getting back in the game after being down 3-0," said Head Coach Mauricio Ruiz. "We showed what we are capable of. Tonight was the first time that the team really stuck together and fought for each other. It will make us stronger going forward."

After a scoreless opening half, the Fighting Camels struck early with three goals recorded in six minutes. Seth Jones scored Campbell's first and final goal in regulation at the 50th and 56th minutes.

Effectively ending the team's two-match scoreless drought, Lima put the Dolphins on the board at the 58:47 mark when he caught a volley to the right side of the net. The play ignited Jacksonville's offense as it went on to take four corners in the following 11 minutes, two of which were back-to-back, but only one resulted in a shot, a saved header by Cameron Grassmyer.

Lima continued to pace the Dolphins' efforts with a cross to the top of the box that was tucked past the Camels' keeper by Mrabure. The goal pulled JU within one, 3-2, with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.

A handball foul set up JU for a penalty kick at the 86:40 mark, and while the shot was saved, JU's first miss of the season, Amico made a run on the ball and landed the 3-3 equalizer.

Both teams tallied plenty of opportunities in overtime but it was another handball foul, this time on the Fins, that assisted CU in closing the match. Bradley Farias, the scorer of Campbell's second goal, converted the penalty kick at the 107:25 mark.

Jacksonville continues its North Carolina trip on Sunday at UNC-Greensboro. First kick is scheduled for 3 p.m.
