Dolphins Suffer 4-0 Setback in Conference Opener

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jacksonville University's men's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams Wednesday.

In the decision, the Dolphins' record now stands at 2-6-1, while FGCU improved to 3-2-1, extending its home A-Sun streak to 27 wins in a row.

"We played a good first half, created some good chances but we ran out of legs in the second half and the game opened up," said Head Coach Mauricio Ruiz.

"I did not prepare the team well enough for this match and I take responsibility for the loss. We will rebound on Saturday against USC upstate and get on the right track again."

Nearly two minutes after the opening whistle, the Dolphins captured the match's first good look at goal on a shot by Ivo Lima. The sequence began with a corner, what eventually became the first of five in the half, and Lima forced the FGCU keeper to make a solid save on a close angle.

His shot finished as the Dolphins' lone on goal.

The Eagles were active the entire half with eight shots, four on goal, and struck the scoreboard in the 35th minute. Kamar Marriot played a long ball from the center of the field and Dylan Sacramento received the pass and finished with a shot to the left of the net.

The 1-0 advantage remained through the half and doubled six minutes in to the second.

FGCU tacked on two other scores in the final period with Sacramento recording his second goal and the game winner on a 12-yard shot at the 68:03 mark.

Jacksonville returns to action this Saturday against USC Upstate at Southern Oak Stadium. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
