Dolphins Off to Best Start in Years

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's soccer team is off to its best start in four years. Currently sitting at 2-0-1 on the season, the Dolphins hosted Detroit Mercy at Southern Oak Stadium on Sunday evening where it earned a 3-1 victory to remain unbeaten.

Junior goalkeeper Liam O'Connor received his first collegiate start in the match while sophomores Allan Morgan and Ejiroghene Mrabure came off the bench to score Jacksonville's goals.

"First off, we're just so happy for Liam. He's had two years here with some unfortunate injuries. He's battled everything from concussions to elbow injuries to dislocated hips. We're really excited that he's healthy and fit enough to be play. He gave us exactly what we've been hoping – a lot of maturity, composure and leadership back there."

O'Connor recorded six saves, surrendering one goal, in 82 minutes of action in the net.

"The win was a typical college soccer game. It wasn't pretty. In the second half, Detroit came back but we have depth on this team and guys came off the bench and contributed. For us to get a win at home, as we prepare to get on the road for a four-game road trip, is huge."

Morgan registered the first goal of the evening in the 37th minute before an own goal doubled JU's advantage to 2-0. Around the 39:08 mark, Jack Burns' shot was deflected by a UDM defender and sliced to the back of the net.

Jacksonville held the Titans scoreless until Tyler Moorman's goal (58:17) but collected insurance at the 83rd minute. In the play of the game, Ivo Lima played the ball in the box to a charging Mrabure who connected on a diving header.

"I just made my run, saw the ball coming in and knew I had to make a dive for it," said Mrabure. "It was a perfect ball, all I had to do was get to it."

The season is shaping to be Jacksonville's best start since it went 3-1-1 in the 2010 season.

The Dolphins' four-match road swing begins at Old Dominion on Friday. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Quotables:

Morgan on his score and season: "There was a lot of chaos going on at the time [I scored] but I was really proud. I was just looking for my chance. I had a good practice yesterday and was really hitting the ball well. We've been training hard. Kudos to Coach Mauricio. He trains us very well. We go out there with confidence and are just really looking forward to winning everything this season."

Mrabure on his play this season: "My season so far has been a little rough. Coming back from an injury, I'm just trying to get more minutes to play for the team. Coach Mauricio has been doing a great job of getting us prepared for every game. The competition is on and we've been doing very well."
