Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Josh Adeyeye hit seven threes on Saturday night and tied his career best of 24 points, propelling the men's basketball team of Jacksonville University over Lipscomb 76-73.
"Overall I thought it was a pretty good performance," said Head Coach Tony Jasick. "We had some things that didn't go our way, but I think our guys responded well to the adversity."
The Bisons came out of half-time on fire, outscoring the Dolphins 18-6 in the first eight minutes. Jacksonville started to chip away with baskets from Marcel White and Kori Babineaux, but the Bisons answered, stretching the lead to eight with 11:35 remaining. An Adeyeye three-pointer gave the Dolphins a 55-54 lead with 7:27 left, their first lead in eight minutes. JU and Lipscomb traded baskets for the final seven minutes, with the lead changing hands nine times. With just 17 seconds left in the game, White gave the Dolphins the lead for good with a tough layup. Adeyeye stole the ball on the Bisons' next possession, sinking two clutch free throws to put the lead at 76-73, and Lipscomb's J.C. Hampton clanged the Bisons' last chance off the rim at the buzzer.
Adeyeye had 24 points on 7-15 shooting, and also pulled down 11 boards. The senior shot 50 percent from deep, and made three of his four free throws. Babineaux collected a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, and J.R. Holder had 11 points and 10 rebounds. White had 11 points, six boards, four assists, and one steal. Antwon Clayton six points, six rebounds, four steals, and one block.
"Guys who are great players stepped up to the challenge," said Jasick when asked about the performances of several individuals in the absence of Darius Dawkins. "As a program we want to care about toughness and we want to care about unselfishness, and that's what we did tonight."
The Bisons won the tip and scored first, jumping out to a 5-2 lead, their only lead of the half. The Dolphins quickly tied the game and then took the lead on back-to-back Adeyeye threes, leading Lipscomb 8-7 at the first media timeout. Out of the timeout the Dolphins went on a 10-2 run, doubling up the Bisons 18-9 with 12:02 left in the period. But Lipscomb found some rhythm, outscoring JU 7-2 over the next five minutes. The teams traded buckets the rest of the half, and the Dolphins went into the locker room leading 35-29.
The Dolphins are on the road for the next three games, traveling to the New Jersey Institute of Technology for the first time on Thursday before facing USC Upstate next Saturday and Florida Gulf Coast in two weeks.
