Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University men's soccer had all of Southern Oak Stadium at the edge of their seats Tuesday night. The Dolphins hosted No. 20 Florida Gulf Coast in their final home match of the season, and Diego Sanchez scored the game-opening goal in the first half.
Jacksonville's advantage lasted 41 minutes, and the 1-1 tie stuck for 17 before FGCU notched the game-winner. In the 2-1 decision, eight of the JU's matches this season – all five in ASUN Conference play – have been decided by one goal.
"Florida Gulf Coast is one of the top teams in the country, and we behaved and played extremely well against them," said Head Coach Mauricio Ruiz. "We deserved a little more than a loss, but I think we take the positives from this game and turn it around for Stetson on Saturday."
With 20:57 on the clock, Sanchez set the crowd ablaze when he broke the Eagles' backline to nab a shot near the right post. The ball traveled straight to the back of the net for his second goal of the season and Jacksonville's 1-0 advantage.
After the Dolphin score, FGCU recorded 14 of the final 16 shots. Albert Ruiz, the nation's leading goal scorer, tied the match on a deflection from the right post and Shak Adams recorded the game-winner on a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.
One match remains on the Dolphins' regular season schedule and it has major postseason implications. Four teams have already clinched a spot in the ASUN Tournament and the other two will be determined this weekend.
Jacksonville, Stetson and USC Upstate are all tied at 1-4 in conference standings. If the Dolphins defeat Stetson Saturday at 7 p.m., they will secure a postseason berth.
