No Ceilings for JU in Sixth Straight Win

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Only one could leave Historic Swisher Gymnasium with its sixth consecutive victory, and it was Jacksonville University. The Dolphins (8-2) played host to Troy (5-2) Saturday afternoon in a battle of the five-game winning streaks, and posted a 77-70 decision.

Brandi Buie poured in a career-high 27 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the floor to guide JU's offensive efforts. She also added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Dolphins never trailed, but Troy made it a close contest with a score of 68-65 in the final three minutes. In the success, Jacksonville lived up to its billing for "No Ceilings Day."

"How the girls played today summed up what "No Ceilings" is all about," said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "When you have the right people around you, and you all stick together, there are no ceilings to what you can achieve. Troy is a team ranked seventh in the mid-major poll, and we were able to defend our court and take the victory. That's what "No Ceilings" is about."

After three early ties, Jacksonville used three-balls to take a ten-point advantage at the half. A 13-2 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers by Buie and one by Sherranda Reddick, pushed the Dolphin edge to 28-17 at the 5:42 mark in the second quarter.

Jacksonville hovered around a double-digit advantage for nearly 21 minutes – leading by as much as 16 points – before allowing an 11-1 run near the midpoint of the fourth quarter.

"Fight, fight, fight" continued McCuin. "This, in my opinion, was our biggest win this year. For one, we're down a starter, and two, Brandi Buie has emerged. This was a contrast of two teams deciding who was going to dominate at their game. We won because we were able to defend at a high level."

The Dolphins relied on their defense to seal the victory, limiting the Trojans to just one field goal in the final 3:30.

Reddick finished the evening with 15 points while Christin Mercer added 13.  Both recorded seven rebounds.

After taking a week for final exams, Jacksonville closes out its three-game home stand next Friday against Florida Memorial at 7 p.m.
