Second-Half Stops Lift Dolphins Over Florida Memorial

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University's women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games following a 76-51 victory over Florida Memorial Friday evening at Historic Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins (9-2) outscored the Lions, 46-17, in the second half to overcome a 34-30 deficit at halftime.

"I was very disappointed in how we came out today," said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "We have to be more mature if we want to achieve our goals. Nevertheless, I was pleased with how we played in the second half. This team knows what we're trying to do, and they have to come out and play our way every day."

Freshman Khadijah Brown picked up her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, eclipsing her previous career-best of eight points, while Kimberly Dawkins recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. The post players each added three blocks.

"I'm super proud of Khadijah tonight. I always knew this was in her; it's a small sign of what she's capable of doing. I also have to tip my hat to Kim. She made up for some early mishaps to finish strong."

Caught in unfamiliar territory, Jacksonville saw its second halftime deficit at home. The Dolphins entered the locker room trailing by one against Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 13), and were down by four against the Lions.

The home side led by as much as six, 13-7, with 2:22 on the clock in the first quarter before FMU used Dolphin turnovers and three-pointers to jump ahead. Fifteen of Florida Memorial's first half points were tabbed on JU turnovers.

The tides turned in the third quarter as the Dolphins forced 13 turnovers including 10 steals to outscore Florida Memorial, 25-6.

Sherranda Reddick led both teams with 23 points, 21 of those coming from beyond the arc. Christin Mercer added 18 and five boards.

The Dolphins return to action Tuesday when they travel to Myrtle Beach for the Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational. In a single game appearance, JU takes on North Carolina at 7 p.m.
