Dolphins Close River City Leadoff with Walk-Off

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The softball team of Jacksonville University (3-1) closed out the River City Leadoff with a 4-3 win over Coastal Carolina (0-5) Sunday in the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. Adrienne Ramsay scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh for the game-winning run.

"We did a really nice job of bouncing back and fighting in the end," said Head Coach Jennifer Steele. "Paige did a great job coming in and keeping us in that ball game. She came in and forced so many ground ball outs. It kept the game manageable, which gave our hitters a lot of confidence."

The Chanticleers kicked off the scoring in the top of the first inning with a three-run homer by Kelsey Dominik. Paige Curtis came in to relieve Taylor Rossman, and shut down Coastal Carolina for the rest of the game.

Jacksonville responded with some offense of its own in the bottom of the second. Heather Roberts led off the inning with a walk, Brooke Smith singled, and then Danielle Baker hit a three-run homer to tie it up at 3-3.

Neither team could find any more offense for the next four innings, and the score was still tied 3-3 at the top of the seventh. But JU's Curtis began to wear down in the seventh inning, allowing a single to Morgan Noad and a double to Dominik, putting the Chanticleers' winning run on third. Coach Steele responded with another pitching change, bringing in Victoria Brown from left field to close the game. Brown forced the next Coastal batter into a double play, and ended the inning by forcing Alexis Alvino to ground out.

"Victoria came in huge and got three ground ball outs," said Steele. "We were able to ride that momentum into the last inning, and our hitters did a great job making late-game adjustments."

Jacksonville returns to the field on Friday with the Dolphin Invitational, a tournament that will feature Penn State, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, and Radford.
