Freshmen spur Dolphins to exhibition win

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville coach Mindy McCord wanted to get more Dolphins, especially the younger players, on the field and see how they would perform in a game setting. The early results: spectacular.

All 34 active Jacksonville players saw the field Monday, with freshmen accounting for eight goals and three assists in a 14-5 win over the Wales national team in an exhibition at Southern Oak Stadium.

"All 34 players competed in meaningful regulation time, which is great after playing just 23 in our first two games," McCord said. "We had so many combinations of players on the field at various times, and we got to see a lot.

"I'm most happy with our effort defensively and seeing our three goalies only allow five combined goals. Our young players got a lot better today which is terrific in February."

Danielle Della Rocca and Lillie Miller combined to score the first six goals for the Dolphins, as each player netted a hat trick a little more than halfway into the match. Jody Julmice and Rachel Aus each tickled the twine in the first half, as Jacksonville staked to an 8-2 edge at the break.

Five different Dolphins found the back of the cage in the final 30 minutes. Kerri Clayton posted two goals after halftime, while Della Rocca, Erin McGuire, Amelia Pedwell and Abby Remenapp each contributed one.

Della Rocca finished with a game-high four goals and one assist. Miller had three goals, while Clayton followed up with two.

Pedwell recorded a game-high three assists, while Kelsey Wiglesworth, Jaime Chapman, Ashtyn Hiron and Kelly Lacy had one apiece.

Sally Holbert picked up a game-high four ground balls in the victory, while Pedwell added three. Sam Bauer and Caitlin McMahon each had three draw controls.

Goalkeeper Kaylyn Kearns made one save in 17:36 for the win. Mariah Cudlipp had one save in 19:47, and Kristen Brunoforte added three in 22:37.

Five different Wales' players had one goal in defeat.

Erin Walters-Williams made nine saves in the loss and went the distance in the net.

Jacksonville outshot Wales, 29-14, and held an edge in draw controls, 11-10, and ground balls, 24-19. The Dolphins were 3-of-4 on free position shots.

The Dolphins host defending Big South Conference regular-season and tournament champion Winthrop on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET at D.B. Milne Field.
