JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University's softball team split action in the final day of the Dolphin Invitational Sunday with a 9-3 loss to Penn State and a 9-1 five-inning victory over Georgetown.
Looking to avenge yesterday's 6-0 loss to Jacksonville, the Nittany Lions struck early with five straight singles and an uncharacteristic stolen base to jump out 5-0 in the second inning.
Paige Curtis, taking the mound in relief for Victoria Brown, concluded the frame with a pair of ground outs.
Three of the Dolphins' four available pitchers saw action in game one. Taylor Rossman stifled Penn State for 2.2 innings, allowing just three hits before a two-run shot to center field stretched the visitors' advantage to 9-2 in the fifth.
Five different Dolphins recorded a hit and Ciara Jones, Brooke Smith, and Ashley McNally were credited with RBIs.
After loading the bases with one out in the home half of the second, McNally drew an RBI-walk for the Dolphins' first run of the game. JU left the second, sixth and seventh innings with a runner on each square, and stranded 14 total.
In opposite fashion of game one, Emily Sanchez worked a 2-2 count with two outs on the board before clearing the bases with a grand slam to left field.
Jacksonville again loaded the bases in the fifth inning, and Danielle Baker tabbed the walk-off RBI on a sacrifice fly to left.
Brown pitched five innings against the Hoyas, and conceded one hit.
