Jacksonville Sweeps Opening Weekend Series

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Another monstrous effort offensively, with 16 hits and 14 runs, and a shutout start by Greg Shannahan led Jacksonville to a three-game sweep of Mount St. Mary's with a 14-3 triumph Sunday at Sessions Stadium.

"I thought we did a nice job of finishing up the weekend. Our guys were prepared and we didn't have a lull after a long doubleheader on Saturday," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "That shows a lot of character in that locker room and we need to keep that focus and work ethic."

The Dolphin (3-0) offense began most of its damage with a four-run fourth inning. All four of the JU hits in the frame were doubles from the bats of Franco Guardascione, Seth DeWitt, Angel Camacho, and Dakota Julylia. Mountaineer (0-3) starter Chad Diehl (0-1) only allowed one earned run on five hits over 3.2 innings due to one of three Mountaineer errors on the day.

Jacksonville pulled away with eight runs in the fifth inning off relievers Hunter Shuff and Austin Bonadio, who each pitched 2/3 innings. Shuff gave up five earned and Bonadio surrendered three. Sam Armstrong singled twice in the inning and drove in three runs.

The Dolphins saw multi-hit games from Parker Perez, Armstrong, Guardascione, DeWitt, and Camacho.

Shannahan (1-0) earned the win by allowing five hits over five innings with five strikeouts and just one walk.

"We played fairly clean defense and Shannahan did a nice job of mixing all three pitches and setting the tone," said Montez.

Chris Gau and Shane Wise each gave up a run in relief of Shannahan while Mike Cassala pitched a scoreless ninth for the Dolphins.

On the weekend, Jacksonville tallied 46 hits and outscored Mount St. Mary's 42-12. The Dolphin starting pitchers combined to throw 15.2 innings, allow only one run, and strike out 18 batters.

Up next, Jacksonville heads to Tallahassee, Fla., for a Tuesday tilt with #16 Florida State. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

"It was good to get some more at-bats and playing time in, which will benefit us down the road," said Montez. "We've got to enjoy this for 12 hours then get ready to face a nationally ranked Florida State team on Tuesday with a lot of baseball to play next week."
