Baumann and Bats Fuel Jacksonville Win at Florida State

Box Score

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A four-run second inning and a dominating start by Michael Baumann led Jacksonville to a 7-3 win at Florida State Tuesday at Dick Howser Stadium. The win was Jacksonville's first at Florida State since a 7-6 victory on May 7, 2008.

Baumann went 5.1 innings and gave up just one run on four hits. He walked two batters and totaled six strikeouts.

"Another strong performance from our starting pitcher who got us out of the gate," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "Once again a good job by our leadoff guy Parker Perez setting the table for Austin Hays, JJ Gould, and Seth Dewitt among others down in the lineup."

Jacksonville (4-0) began the scoring with four runs in the second inning. Franco Guardascione belted his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, and was followed by a DeWitt double. Angel Camacho then doubled as well out to left, and was driven in by a Perez single. Hays followed suit with an RBI single up the middle to plate Dakota Julylia for Jacksonville's final run.

The Dolphins added two more runs in the fifth inning when Dakota Julylia singled, and then an error by Gage West allowed DeWitt and JJ Gould to score.

JJ Gould chipped in a solo homer in the ninth to complete the Dolphin scoring.  Perez went 4-5 and Hays went 3-5, while Gould, DeWitt, and Julylia tallied two hits apiece.

FSU starter Tyler Holton (0-1) was hung with the loss after lasting three innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.

Baumann left in the sixth inning after a Cal Raleigh solo homer to right. The Seminoles (5-2) added two runs in the ninth. Kyle Arjona pitched 2.1 innings and gave up two hits to go along with two strikeouts. Mike Cassala picked up his first save by pitching the final 1.1 innings.

"Our young freshman did a nice job coming out of the bullpen, embracing the environment, and attacking zone," said Montez. "We played clean defense and didn't give them any extra opportunities, which you need to do when you're facing a nationally-ranked club like Florida State."

Jacksonville plays at North Florida Wednesday, Mar. 2, for the second edition of the Mayor's Cup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
