Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Seven shutout innings by Michael Baumann lifted Jacksonville to a 2-1 win over Toledo Friday at Sessions Stadium.
"It was good getting big Mike (Baumann) back on track on a Friday night," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "He did a good job after the first couple of innings of pitching inside effectively. The key to the game tonight was throwing strikes."
Baumann (2-0) pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, no runs or walks, and struck out a career-tying eight batters. He set down 14 consecutive batters from the second inning until a two-out single by Matt Hansen in the sixth.
Jacksonville (9-3) scored first for the 11th time this season without having the ball leave the infield. JJ Gould walked and was followed by a Seth DeWitt hit-by-pitch. Franco Guardascione laid down a sacrifice bunt which would allow Gould to score on an Angel Camacho groundout.
Parker Perez singled on a bunt in the sixth inning to extend his hit streak to 12 games. Hays followed with a single and Gould walked to load the bases for DeWitt. DeWitt then watched a 3-1 pitch miss and walked for his fourth RBI of the season.
Toledo (1-12-1) starter Steven Calhoun (1-3) tossed six innings and gave up only two runs on four hits. The lefty walked four batters and struck out six.
The Dolphins threatened again in the seventh off reliever Kevin Cline. Nathan Koslowski doubled to right center but was stranded at third after a wild pitch.
The Rockets knocked home their first run on a Ross Adolph double in the eighth off reliever Chris Gau. Mike Cassala then pitched a clean ninth inning for the save.
"You've got to tip your cap to guy (Calhoun), who was very effective and he is going to win quite a bit for them this year," said Montez. "We have to do a better job offensively of making adjustments at the plate when we face guys like him."
Jacksonville plays Toledo again on Saturday, Mar. 12, at 2:00 p.m. at Sessions Stadium.
