Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Toledo used a four-run fifth inning and allowed just two hits in a 6-1 defeat of Jacksonville Saturday at Sessions Stadium.
"It was the first time this young season that we didn't pitch and hit at the same time," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "I was pleased with our pitching out of the bullpen that gave us a chance to get back in the ball game with four and a third scoreless innings. We have an opportunity to win a series tomorrow and that's what we need to do."
Jacksonville (9-4) scored first for the 12th time this season thanks to a JJ Gould leadoff single and Toledo error in the second inning. Gould initially reached on a single to third baseman Dan Zuchowski. On an Angel Camacho fielder's choice, Gould took third on error by shortstop Deion Tansel. He then scored on a Nathan Koslowski groundout to second.
Toledo (2-12-1) took its first lead of the series with two runs on two hits and two errors in the third inning. Both runners scored on a failed pickoff attempt to third base and the ball bounced deep into foul territory.
The Rockets tacked on four runs in the fifth. After a single up the middle by Dalton Bollinger, Toledo loaded the bases, and on a 3-2 pitch, John Martillotta doubled hard down the third baseline to drive in three runs.
Nathan Disch (2-1) went 4.2 innings and gave up six hits and four earned runs with two walks and five strike outs in the loss.
Mike Schappell allowed just a hit in 3.1 innings of relief, and Ryan Quintero pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Toledo starter Ross Achter (1-3) got the win with an impressive start with one unearned run over six innings and allowed just two hits. His second hit was a sixth inning double by Austin Hays. He walked one batter and tallied three strikeouts.
Steven Duby pitched the final three innings and did not give up a hit to earn his first save.
Jacksonville completes its series with Toledo on Sunday, Mar. 13, at 1:00 p.m. at Sessions Stadium.
