Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders scored five first quarter goals and went on to sail past Jacksonville University, 12-6, in Southern Conference men's lacrosse here Saturday.
Richmond's Dan Ginestro, a junior attack, propelled his team early with two first period goals as the Spiders (6-1, 2-0) rolled out to a 4-0 lead before JU senior midfielder Dakota Rohlin got the Dolphins on the board with 2:20 to play in the first on an assist by Cody Ford.
The Spiders, who beat ninth-ranked Duke last week, scored three more goals in the second period for an 8-1 halftime lead.
The Dolphins got untracked after halftime and outscored Richmond 5-4 in the second half.
The Spiders scored three goals early in the third and JU freshman midfielder Evan Tyler responded with back-to-back goals, the first unassisted and the second with help from sophomore Shawn Ewert.
Eric Applegate kept the Dolphins (2-4, 0-1) on a roll leading off the fourth period with a goal at the 14:36 mark. Ford, with an unassisted goal and Ewert, on an assist from Mitchell Parker, rounded out JU scoring.
"We grew as a team today,'' JU coach Guy Van Arsdale said. "We played terrific team defense and the second half our guys worked hard and fought, never giving up. We have a chance to get better if we learn from this experience.''
Richmond got off 42 shots compared to JU's 19 and Dolphin goal keeper Ben Gleichenhaus was credited with nine saves.
JU returns to Southern Conference action Saturday with a home game against Bellarmine at noon.
