Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nathan Disch's 6.2 strong innings and 10 Dolphin hits led Jacksonville to 7-2 victory against Samford Saturday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
"That was a good answer-back win for us. These guys started out with purpose," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "It began with starting pitching and Disch did a great job as an upperclassman taking on that leadership role. It was a good team win and everyone contributed up and down the lineup. Even though we had two errors I thought we played clean defense."
Disch (3-1) earned the win by allowing just two runs, both in the second inning, on seven hits, three walks, and a strikeout.
"The defense today really picked me up on a lot of groundballs and double plays, which helped save the game by giving us momentum ending innings. Our offense did a great job keeping up today, too," said Disch.
Jacksonville (12-6) scored early and often. Austin Hays singled in the first inning, stole second, and scored on a single by Sam Armstrong.
Samford (11-8) scored its two runs in the second inning. T.J. Dixon singled home a run and Heath Quinn walked in a run.
The Dolphins answered with a run in the third on Franco Guardascione's bases-loaded double play that plated Connor Stephens.
Jacksonville scored twice in the fourth without tallying a hit. With the bags full, Angel Camacho scored on a balk by reliever Wyatt Burns. Sam Armstrong then grounded out to bring home Parker Perez.
Perez would add to JU's lead with a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the following inning.
Jacksonville completed its scoring with two runs in the seventh. Nathan Koslowski led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. Angel Camacho then took a 1-0 offering into left field to pick up an RBI. After Camacho stole second and took third on a wild pitch, Hays lifted a sacrifice fly to cap JU's lead at 7-2.
Tristan Widra (2-1) took the loss with two runs on four hits, walks, and strikeouts in three innings. After Widra, Samford used seven relievers who combined to allow three earned runs on six hits.
Kyle Arjona earned his second save over the final 2.1 innings for the Dolphins and gave up no runs on three hits without walking a batter and picking up two strikeouts.
Of JU's 10 hits, Armstrong and Camacho each had two and Armstrong led the Dolphins with two RBI. The Dolphins also turned two double plays.
The series between Jacksonville and Samford concludes Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
