Dolphins fall to Bellarmine, 10-9

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The disappointment was clear on Jacksonville University men's lacrosse coach Guy Van Arsdale's face after Saturday's 10-9 loss to Bellarmine in a Southern Conference game at D. B. Milne Field.

"That one stings,'' Van Arsdale said. "You can't fault effort; it's what we do best.''

The Dolphins (2-5, 0-2) hung tough throughout with the game tied at eight at the end of three quarters when the Knights (4-4, 2-0) played possession ball and outscored the Dolphins 2-1 in the final period.

The game winner came with 30 seconds to play when Bellarmine's Brian Wall connected for the win.

"They were shooting the ball wide a lot. They weren't great shots, they were just flinging them but they kept possession because they were able to cover it on the end line,'' Van Arsdale said. "They took seven or eight shots in the fourth quarter that were possession shots that were no threat to us but it makes it tough on you because you've got to keep playing defense.''

Key to the loss were the only two failed JU clears which came toward the end of the game.

"We failed on two clears the whole game, which is excellent, 17 of 19, but it was the last two and it cost us the game,'' he said. "They were both errors of omission where guys went to the wrong spots and didn't execute because they got a little tired or the moment was a little too large for us and we need to do a better job preparing for that.''

The Dolphins took a 3-1 first quarter lead when Chase Miller, Austin Collins and Dakota Rohlin all scored and moved to a 4-1 advantage when Eric Applegate took an assist from Rohlin for a man up goal, one of his three scores of the day.

The Knights fought back and led 6-5 at the half and the teams played even through the third quarter.

Evan Tyler gave JU the lead at 9-8 with 13:41 to play before Bellarmine played keep away.

"We've got the effort pieces but we're not the kind of team that can afford lapses in execution because when we do it (the ball) ends up in our cage,'' Van Arsdale said. "We've got to get the mental pieces down.''

JU returns to action Saturday at Holy Cross at 11:05 a.m.
