Box Score GREENVILLE, N.C. –The Jacksonville lineup smacked 12 hits, including five doubles and a home run, and scored eight times in an 8-6 triumph against No.19 East Carolina Friday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
"That was a complete team win and everybody contributed," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "We had some young guys grow up tonight, like Dakota Julylia, who did a fantastic job. I thought Sam Armstrong swung like Sammy can."
Following its recipe to success all season, the Dolphins put a dent on the scoreboard first with two runs in the first inning. Parker Perez led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, and JJ Gould drove home the first run on a double. Following a groundout, Sam Armstrong ripped a single to right field and Gould scored to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead.
ECU (15-8) tied the game in the second on a two-run home run by Williams-Sutton, and would be the only runs allowed by starter Michael Baumann until the sixth.
Jacksonville (15-7) answered with a couple of runs an inning later. With the bases load, Seth DeWitt hit a ground ball to third, where third baseman Eric Tyler stepped on the bag for the force out, then threw home. Catcher Travis Watkins did not apply a tag to the runner Perez and the Dolphins regained the lead. Later with the bags full again, Dakota Julylia drew a two-out walk and gave JU a 4-2 edge.
Jacksonville chased out starter Jacob Wolfe (2-2), who took the loss after 2.1 innings and four runs off four hits.
In the fifth, Seth DeWitt blasted his first home run of the year with a solo tater off reliever Sam Lanier.
The Pirates got two more off Baumann (3-1) in the sixth off RBI singles from Turner Brown and Garrett Brooks. Baumann went six innings with four runs off four hits in his win. He struck out six and walked five.
The Dolphins continued a streak of scoring in the odd-numbered innings with three runs in the seventh. Gould led off the frame with a double, and Armstrong reached on an error at second base. Angel Camacho then cued a double down the third base line to score Gould. After a pitching change of Zack Mozingo for Nick Durazo, Julylia singled to score Armstrong and Camacho and gave the Dolphins an 8-4 lead.
"We played loose and really well in momentum situations. The team energy carried well and we started to pick up on each other," said Gould. "I think that we've been playing looser and when you do that it's a fun and simple game."
ECU would look to rally with two runs off reliever Chris Gau in the eighth. Gau faced the minimum in the seventh thanks to a 6-4-3 twin-killer, but gave up two hits the following frame that led to a pair of runs. Brown grounded out to second but scored Eric Tyler, who led off with a single. Then, Williams-Sutton plated ECU's final run on a sacrifice fly to right. Ryan Granda relieved Gau with two outs and gave up consecutive singles, but closed the inning with a groundout to first.
Mike Cassala picked up his sixth save with only one hit allowed in the ninth.
Armstrong led the way with three hits and Julylia totaled three RBI.
"To see these guys pull on the same end of the rope is why they have a chance to do some things because of their consistency. We need to enjoy this one for 12 hours and come out tomorrow ready to go," said Montez.
The Dolphins wrap up the series with East Carolina for a rubber match Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
