ATHENS, Ga. – Jacksonville University triumphed over Austin Peay Friday, 7-3, but fell to No. 9 Georgia, 5-0, in the opening day of the Georgia Softball Classic.
The Dolphins started their five–game appearance at the Turner Softball Field with the Lady Governors, nabbing a 4-0 lead in the very first inning.
Ciara Jones, Jacksonville's leadoff hitter, singled to reach base and later tapped home plate on a two-RBI double by Victoria Brown. Paige Curtis capped scoring in the inning with a two-RBI hit of her own.
In the second inning, the speedy Danielle Baker recorded her third triple of the season, and nearly walked away with an infield homer before being called out at home on an outfield assist. While she didn't score, Curtis continued her impressive day at the plate with another RBI-single in the next frame.
The Dolphins had an opportunity to stretch their 5-0 advantage, but instead left a runner stranded on each base.
Brown stifled Austin Peay batters through three innings of work. She had allowed just three hits in the first half of the game before three straight led to a pair of Lady Governor runs.
Jacksonville pushed its lead back to five after Baker cleared the fence with a solo shot in the sixth and Curtis recorded her fourth RBI of the game with a single in the seventh.
Brown earned the win for her six innings pitched, whiffing six and allowing eight hits.
The Dolphins concluded the day against No. 9 Georgia, tallying three hits in a pitchers' duel.
Brown received the nod in game two and went on to limit the Bulldogs to two hits through two innings; both were tabbed in the latter frame.
Georgia struck the scoreboard with a two-RBI single in the fourth and plated another run before the inning concluded.
A fielding error in the fifth led to the Bulldogs' 5-0 advantage.
The Dolphins continue tournament play tomorrow with a doubleheader against Western Carolina and game two with the Lady Governors.
