Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Seven shutout innings from Jacksonville starter Nathan Disch and two first inning runs led the Dolphins to a 2-0 win Friday against Columbia at Sessions Stadium.
"That was a well-pitched ballgame by both starters. Their pitcher (George Thanopoulos) got stronger as the game went and will be special for them this year," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "I have to tip my hat to our guy, Nathan Disch, for attacking the zone again and having four pitches for strikes."
Disch (2-0) pitched a career-best seven innings and allowed only four hits and one walk. He rang up five strikeouts and has not allowed a run over his first two starts.
"It felt good today and all my pitches were on," said Disch. "It was a great job by Franco (Guardascione). He's the one that called the game and I stand by him out there. He gave me a lot to work with."
Jacksonville (5-1) scored its only runs of the game in its first appearance at the plate. Parker Perez began the inning with a single through the left side and was followed by an Austin Hays walk. Sam Armstrong then knocked home Perez with a single through the right side and Hays advanced to third. After Guardascione struck out, Nathan Koslowski singled up the middle to score Hays. Koslowski would steal second base, but, after a JJ Gould single, was called out at home.
From there, Thanopoulos (0-1) settled in and did not allow a Dolphin hit over his next six innings. He finished with five strikeouts and two walks. Zack Bahm of Columbia (0-1) pitched one hitless inning in relief.
Kyle Arjona relieved Disch to start the eighth inning and ran into trouble with a pair of two-out walks, but threw out shortstop Joe Engel at third base trying to steal.
Mike Cassala earned his second save with two hits in a scoreless ninth inning.
"Columbia is Ivy League champs for three years in a row for a reason and we have our work cut out for us the next two days. We've got to enjoy this one for 12 hours and come back ready to play tomorrow," said Montez.
Jacksonville continues its series with Columbia Saturday, Mar. 5, at with a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m. Jacksonville will honor former centerfielder Kevin Ferreira, who passed away last May, before the first game.
