ATHENS, Ga. – There was a one-run differential in both of Jacksonville University's Saturday games as the Dolphins split action in the Georgia Softball Classic with a 6-5 loss to Western Carolina and a 4-3 victory over Austin Peay.
Jacksonville's three-run inning in the top of the seventh fell just a bit short against the Catamounts, but Victoria Brown's walk-off homer sealed game two.
Despite late heroics, Jacksonville could not gain ground on the Western Carolina pitcher Lily Hayes. The Catamount ace recorded seven strikeouts and allowed two hits in 6.2 innings.
Heading into the seventh, the Dolphins trailed by four runs before Katarina Waldrop sparked the team's comeback. She singled to Hayes before back-to-back doubles from Heather Roberts and Emily Sanchez scored three.
Jacksonville was down to its last out prior to Roberts' two-bagger and WCU ended the game on a ground out with one runner left on base.
Against the Lady Governors, Danielle Baker was walked, and later stole second and home to tie things at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
The Dolphins took a 2-1 lead on an RBI-single by Kristen Griffith and the score remained through five innings when Brown added another run on a single.
Three straight Austin Peay hits tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth. The team's leftfielder led-off the inning with a double and the next two batters followed with singles.
Brown was the first Dolphin to step up to the plate in the eighth and homered to right center to secure the win.
Taylor Rossman received the win after pitching the complete game. She fanned five while allowing nine hits and two earned runs.
Jacksonville wraps action in the Georgia Softball Classic Sunday with a single-game against Minnesota. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
