Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville (6-2) baseball team was on both sides of one-run games during a doubleheader Saturday at Sessions Stadium with Columbia (1-2), losing 9-8, then winning, 1-0.
"The first game was a tough one. There was a lot of great emotion with the whole Ferreira family and President Cost out here," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "You're going to have ball games like that when things don't go your way, but to come back like that and win a 1-0 ball game shows the character in that locker room."
Game One
Jacksonville erupted for seven runs on eight hits in the first inning, but saw the visitors from New York score nine unanswered runs and defeat the Dolphins, 9-8, in 10 innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, John Kinne singled home Shane Adams with two outs for the game-winning run. Columbia forced extra innings with two runs in both the seventh and eighth, and three runs in the ninth.
Harrison Egly (1-0) garnered the win in relief with three hits in 1.1 innings, while Mike Cassala (0-1) took the loss with two runs on five hits and four strikeouts.
Spencer Stockton received a no-decision in his second start of the season. The righty went six innings and scattered five hits and three runs.
The Dolphin seven-run first inning began with eight consecutive hits, including five singles by Parker Perez, Austin Hays, Sam Armstrong, Franco Guardascione, and Nathan Koslowski. JJ Gould and Angel Camacho then slammed back-to-back two-run doubles, and David Boyle followed with an RBI single. Dakota Julylia completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left.
Jacksonville scored again in the third on a Perez RBI single.
Game Two
One hit was all that was needed for Jacksonville to edge Columbia, 1-0, in game two of the doubleheader that lasted 6 ½ innings.
JU scored its first run on an RBI groundout from Austin Hays that scored Parker Perez. Perez led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on an error.
Dolphin starter Greg Shannahan (2-0) allowed a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but escaped without any damage. From there, he cruised to total 5.1 innings before leaving with an injury. He allowed only two hits and had three walks and strikeouts. Mike Schappell relieved the starter and got out of a bases-loaded jam with a groundout to first. He pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed two hits, one walk, and had two strikeouts, including the game's final out when Columbia had the tying run on second base. The save was Schappell's first of his Dolphin career.
Adam Cline (0-1) of Columbia took the tough-luck loss with one hit, one run, and one walk along with eight strikeouts over six innings.
Jacksonville concludes its series with Columbia Sunday, Mar. 6, at 12:00 p.m.
