Dolphins win seventh straight, 18-6, over Detroit

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team continued its march to a fourth consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title by knocking off Detroit Mercy, 18-6, in Detroit, Mich., Sunday.

The win was the seventh consecutive and 11th in the last 12 games for JU.

The Dolphins (11-4, 6-0) fell behind momentarily when Detroit's Lexi Kinmond was good on a free position shot, man-up effort before freshman midfielder Jody Julmice started a streak of six consecutive JU goals for a 6-1 lead. Dolphin junior Danielle Della Rocca had a hand in three of the six and she scored and had a pair of assists in the stretch.

After the Titans (7-6, 2-2) scored a pair, JU took control and ended the first half by scoring the last three points as both redshirt senior Taylor McCord and junior Jaime Chapman both connected on their second goals of the half. Kelsey Wiglesworth scored the other on a free position shot for a 9-3 lead.

McCord ended the game with four goals while Wiglesworth and Della Rocca both had hat tricks. Della Rocca had two assists.

While the JU offense continued at its pace in the second half, the JU defense and goal keepers Kaylyn Kearns and Mariah Cudlipp kept the clamps on the Titans. The three goals allowed in the second half was the seventh consecutive game the Dolphins have held opponents to three goals or less in the second half.

"We played great for 45 minutes but had a period where we coasted and you can never do that against a team as opportunistic at Detroit,'' associate head coach Paul McCord said.

Junior defender Kristin Ridenour had three ground balls while Caitlin McMahon had five draw controls and Erika Brager three for the Dolphins.

"We controlled the draw well today which was a goal for the team,'' McCord said. "Our defense again spearheaded the game and we had some strong efforts from a few players who hadn't been showing up in the boxscore as much.''

The Dolphins wind down their regular season with a pair of home games, the first Friday against Furman at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPN3. JU ends the regular season May 1 entertaining Stetson at 1 p.m.
