Dolphins Conclude Season in A-Sun Semis

Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. – In a stunning upset, the Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team concluded its 2016 season in the semifinal round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The top-seeded Dolphins met No. 4 Detroit Friday and fell, 9-8.

The decision snapped a 30-game winning streak against league opponents.

Danielle Della Rocca, Rachel Aus and Kelsey Wiglesworth recorded two goals apiece while goalkeeper Kaylyn Kearns notched four saves.

"We hit eight pipes and when you're in the postseason those add up quickly," said Associate Head Coach Paul McCord. "We needed to finish better in the first half and we had plenty of opportunities. Our defense was strong today, forcing 23 Detroit turnovers and holding them to 15 shots. Unfortunately for us, the game came down to finishing shots and they did a fantastic job finishing on our two keepers.

"Congratulations to them. We worked hard to the end, and I am proud of the effort of our team and what our seniors accomplished. They leave as regular season champions this year."

The Titans struck first in the opening two minutes of the game, and their defense was able to hold Jacksonville at bay until late in the second half. The Dolphins outshot Detroit, 34-15, but more than half of their attempts landed in the stick of the Titan goalie Allison McDonough. She made five saves before the break to assist her team in taking a 5-2 advantage into the locker room.

With 16:33 remaining in regulation, the Titans held their largest lead of the afternoon, 7-2. The goal forced a Dolphin timeout and sparked the team's comeback.

Della Rocca came out of the break with back-to-back goals, and the Dolphins were down a pair in the final minute before Aus and Wiglesworth's scores. The latter came with just one second left on the clock.

"The loss overshadows some good individual efforts," continued McCord. "But we are a team and we will handle it as such."

Jacksonville concludes its 2016 slate with an overall record of 13-5 and an 8-0 ASUN mark. Ashtyn Hiron was named the Defensive Player of the Year, Mindy McCord the Coach of the Year and seven were placed on all-conference teams.
