Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Victoria Brown sent her 12th home run of the season over the left field wall Saturday but it wasn't enough as Jacksonville University softball dropped its final game of the regular season, 7-2, to Florida Gulf Coast.
The Eagles held a 4-0 lead through four innings while JU was searching for its first hit of the afternoon. Ashley Dobson retired 10 straight batters before Brown's single to left field, and the Dolphin senior didn't advance past first base as FGCU recorded a double play on the next at-bat.
In the bottom of the sixth, Brown's two-RBI blast cut the Dolphins' deficit in half, 4-2, but the runs were erased in the next frame. Bree Tourtillott doubled to left center to score two and Makensie McAvoy singled to left for an insurance run.
Brown recorded both of JU's hits on the day, and also received the loss after five innings pitched. Paige Curtis came in at relief in the sixth, conceding three hits and three runs.
After the series win, the Eagles were crowned the 2016 Atlantic Sun regular season champions. They host the ASUN Tournament next week in Fort Myers, Fla.
The double-elimination outing begins Wednesday.
Results from around the league will determine the Dolphins' (27-28, 8-10 ASUN) league standing and tournament opponent.
