Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was all green and white from start to finish as Jacksonville University's volleyball team downed Presbyterian in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20, Friday evening at Historic Swisher Gymnasium.
"A win is always a good result. I'm really pleased with what we're doing from the service line. Once we really got dialed in there, we really did a nice job," stated Head Coach Julie Darty.
JU heads into day two of the JAX Classic presented by Jacksonville Marriott with a 3-1 overall record, while the Blue Hose fell to 2-2 on the year. JU's win ties the all-time series at 2-2.
The Dolphins trailed early in set one, 7-9, but quickly came back with eight consecutive points to lead 15-9. An all-around team effort helped guide the Dolphins to a victory in set one, and that energy filtered into the second set as JU jumped to a quick 5-0 lead. The Blue Hose briefly made a run to cut the deficit to 18-14, but freshman Mallory Mattingly had three of the Dolphins' last four points to put the game away.
JU dominated the middle of set three, never allowing the visitors to score more than three points in a row and taking advantage of long rallies, and Mattingly again put the final point to the court to give the Dolphins the win.
"I think we were focused and dialed in on those long rallies and understanding that we don't need to do anything fancy or flashy to put the ball in play. I think we were pretty efficient tonight," concluded Darty.
JU capitalized on Presbyterian's 23 attack errors and held the Blue Hose to a meager .013 hitting percentage through the first two sets.
Mattingly continued her impressive freshman campaign to lead both teams with 12 kills and added eight digs. Senior Jizzy Gesualdo posted a game-high 28 assists and 13 digs.
Erin Eulitz finished with nine kills for the Blue Hose, while teammate Sara Rogers led the team with 16 assists. Mikayla Register tacked on a game-high 16 digs for the visitors.
JU returns to the court tomorrow when it plays host to Charlotte at 11:00 am and faces Illinois-Chicago in the nightcap at 7:00 pm.
