Four Double-Digit Scorers Guide WBB to Victory over NJIT

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four scored in double-figures to guide the Jacksonville University women's basketball team to a 75-59 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.

Sherranda Reddick recorded a game-high 19 points while Christin Mercer and Kayla Gordon each added 15, and Shalonda Neely rounded out the scoring with a career-high 10 points. She also added seven rebounds and three steals.

With the decision, the Dolphins improved to 18-7, 7-3 in the ASUN Conference, and will play host to a quarterfinal game in the league tournament on Friday, March 3.

"We're looking to build on connectivity, team play, and maturity. The expectations are high for this program," said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "We have set the bar and now we need to live up to it."

The teams kept each other in check most of the first half – there were eight lead changes in the opening quarter alone -- but JU held on to a one-point lead, 32-31, at the break.

Jacksonville relied on creativity to distance itself from the Highlanders in the third quarter. Gordon dazzled with an up-and-under lay-up, Reddick burrowed her way through four defenders for a kiss off the glass and Alexis Burns swished a midrange bank shot as time expired on the shot clock. The spurt concluded with the Dolphins up, 44-36, with 5:36 on the clock.

They mounted a double-digit advantage by the end of the quarter, and maintained it until a Kelly Guarino three-pointer with 8:53 remaining.

Less than two minutes later, Reddick converted a four-point play after knocking down the ensuing free-throw from a corner trey to cement the Dolphins' double-digit lead for good.

Jacksonville returns to Historic Swisher Gymnasium Monday at 7 p.m. for its final home game of the regular season. The Senior Day contest versus USC Upstate will celebrate soon-to-be graduates Kimberly Dawkins, Reddick, and Mercer.
