WBB Rumbles Way to Program-Record 22 Regular Season Wins

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University women's basketball closed out its regular season in rumbling fashion Saturday afternoon. A 69-59 decision over North Florida captured a series sweep over their intercity rival while also propelling the Dolphins to a program-high 22 regular season wins.

The 2007-08 campaign previously set the regular season mark at 21, and still holds the all-time record for overall wins at 23. This year's squad currently sits at 22-7 with an 11-3 record in ASUN Conference play.

Sherranda Reddick posted a game-high 24 points to guide two other double-figure scorers. Kayla Gordon recorded 16 points with seven rebounds and Christin Mercer added 11 and six, respectively. Brandi Buie finished with eight points, six assists and four steals.

"Our word for this year is 'grit', and thank God I chose that word because it's really been a challenge for us through injury and adversity," said head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "We've overcome so much.

"I'm proud of the resilience of our staff and players. We stuck together to find a way to success."

Jacksonville's seniors recorded every point in the team's 12-3 advantage at the first media timeout (6:20). By the end of the first quarter, Reddick's stat line read 11 points – decorated by a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the floor – and the Dolphins led, 20-12.

In the second frame, the looks were there, but JU struggled to generate offense in the first three minutes. Shalonda Neely ended the drought with a make at the free throw line, and it served as a catalyst for three quick buckets.

Jacksonville never relinquished its advantage during the stretch, and entered the locker room up, 35-24. Eighteen of Reddick's points occurred in the first half.

After overwhelming the Ospreys for most of the evening, the Dolphins saw a 17-point, third quarter lead turn into a 55-all tie in the final period (6:42). They held a 43-26 edge with 8:31 on the clock in the third before surrendering an 11-0 UNF run. The Ospreys went on to outscore JU, 21-16, in the frame.

Buie broke the stalemate with a lay-up and Reddick provided additional space with back-to-back three-pointers. The rally ignited a 14-0 run that concluded with a minute left in regulation.

For the fourth consecutive season, Jacksonville will host a first round game in the ASUN Tournament. The third-seeded Dolphins will take on No. 6 Lipscomb next Friday at 7 p.m. in Historic Swisher Gymnasium.

"What's next is when or go home. That is the mentality that we will have," McCuin added. "We don't care who we play or where we play. Our goal is to win three games."
